Wedding Poems

Every schoolgirl is dreaming about the day when she is going to be walking down the church isle.   It is designed to be the most romantic day of her life.  Where would that day be without including some romantic wedding poems either during the marriage ceremony or as part of the speeches given by the more important guests such as the best man and after of the bride.

They see you as a woman, as a bride,
Sweet in a modeled gown of creamy lace;
Your blue eyes turned to him in trust and pride,
Your golden curls a halo for your face.
Yet I, your mother, see you not as this
Alone: I see you as a baby in my arms,
Helpless and small, mine to adore and kiss;
I see you, as a child of three whose charms
And childish laughter are for me me alone;
I see your first, brief step beside my knee;
I see you in the years when you have grown
Into a lovely woman that they see.
A thousand priceless memories I keep
Within my heart. Forgive me that I weep.

Yes of course at any wedding the one person that everyone looks at is the bride. She gets all the attention and so she should it is her big day!

However her mother must have some deep feelings on this wedding day.  This wedding poem expresses not just the love for her duaghter on this special day but reflects back over the brides life as a little girl growing up and the loving characteristics shown in various ways.

Of course the bride’s mother is meant to shed a tear of joy for her daughter at her wedding. But this short love poem brings out the reasons behind the joyful tears spilled at weddings up and down the country.

The violet loves a sunny bank,
The cowslip loves the lea,
The Scarlet creeper loves the elm,
But I love — thee.

The sunshine kisses mount and vale,
The stars they kiss the sea,
The west winds kiss the clover bloom,
But I kiss — thee.

The oriole weds his mottled mate,
The lilies bride o’ the bee
Heaven’s marriage ring is round the earth —
Shall I wed thee?

The Wedding Proposal is a rarely used love poem in weddings nowadays but deserves to be read far more often.

Its simplicity of showing love and romance across nature with each verse ending in a simple statement showing the connection between nature and his own love for his prospective bride with the marriage proposal being in the very last line.  You can just imagine Bernard Taylor (the writer of this loving poem) dropping to his knee to speak the last verse.

Interestingly Bernard Taylor wrote a long list of poetry books having been commisioned by various publishers to walk across the United States to inspire him in his thinking of new love poetry topics.

Born in 1825 in Pennsylvania his first poem was published when he was only 16 years of age.  He died in Germany in 1878 whilst serving as minister to Germany on behalf of the American Government.
